Wood Floor Finishes

There are tons of options out there for wood floor finishes but we are hooked on one we discovered a few years ago.  Would you finish your new floor with vegetable oil?  Sounds crazy right?  Not so crazy if you’re looking for a 0% VOC, natural-looking finish (low sheen) that is easy to touch-up and maintain.  Our Authentic Oil finish is based on vegetable oils with non-aromatic hardeners.  The natural oil finish penetrates the pores of the wood and literally seals the wood from within.  Unlike with polyurethane, small scratches and dents from regular wear and tear are far less noticeable with the low/natural sheen of a natural oil finish.  Instead of screening/sanding the entire floor just to fix a small area, you can touch-up only the areas where it is needed.  We use the natural oil finish on all our prefinished products which also makes a great option if you’re ready to refinish your existing floors.  If you are ready to stop worrying about your wood floors and start living on your floors, give us a call to discuss a natural oil finish.

  1. Wide plank oak flooring and wide plank flooring in general is lovely IMO. I have a strong belief that it only looks good in bigger rooms, though. This natural wood oil finish sounds great since most wood floor owners do not like the idea of sanding and sealing the entire floor. I can see the advantages of the low sheen finish.

  2. Thanks for your comment Anne. The oil really is great & super easy to keep up with. You can even work up a little more sheen by using a top coat of paste. It gives the floor the look of a hand rubbed wax finish but it's much easier to keep up with.

  3. I like the idea of an alternative to aluminum-oxide finishes but have read elsewhere that vegetable oil finishes can go rancid. How does Authentic Oil avoid this?

  4. My home has reclaimed heart pine engineered wide plank flooring. Is it possible to have these floors refinished and have varnish applied?

    1. @JMC. You should be able to refinish your engineered wide plank heart pine 2 or 3 times. I suggest you use our oil finish instead of varnish though. An oiled heart pine floor should be treated like an antique piece of furniture. You never want to re-sand it; just reapply oil and embrace the character that comes with age.

  5. Hi Zack,
I am looking to finish a new Arkansas pine T&G floor. It is a small room (216 sq ft). I would like to stay as natural as possible and was thinking of an oil finish. Do you have any recomendations on the right product to use?
